NIX / Power & the escort / 2 MIN READ

Why she smiles. Why they don’t.

The guards, the solemn faces, the extraordinary precautions. Everyone in this picture understands the stakes. Only one of them can relax.

A relaxed NIX walking with a serious official escort that leaves her path clear
She is not in custody. The open path is part of the arrangement.

Read the photograph again.

At first glance, the picture offers a familiar story: an unusual woman, a formidable escort, authority everywhere. It is tempting to assume the people surrounding her are in control.

They are not. NIX cannot be destroyed. They cannot threaten her into obedience, prevent her from moving or make detention mean what it normally means. Her smile is not defiance performed for the camera. She has nothing to prove to the people beside her.

The suit is everyone’s concern.

Her travelling body contains an extraordinary concentration of energy, described as a small star. The black suit keeps that energy contained. An uncontrolled rupture would end Earth and humanity. NIX would survive.

That changes the purpose of the escort. Its job is to keep her intact. The road stays open because blocking it achieves nothing, and because the person walking down it is already willing to cooperate without being forced.

Some governments settle on a recognisable solution: treat her as a visiting dignitary. Be welcoming. Be careful. Give the person who cannot be pressured a reason to enjoy the visit.

A needle is enough.

In a controlled demonstration, a fine needle makes an infinitesimal hole in her glove. For a few seconds, a narrow beam of energy escapes and melts concrete. Her gloved thumb seals the opening.

There is no exposed fingernail, no bare human finger beneath a torn glove. Just a microscopic aperture, briefly open. The point is precision: show humans enough that they will not decide to test a larger opening for themselves.

Meanwhile, she has things to do.

The scale of the precautions is enormous. Her ambitions for an afternoon can be very small: buy flowers, meet someone, make music. That mismatch is where the humour lives.

“The Only Real Illegal Alien” turns an official label back on the systems that use it. The joke is about authority finding its limits. NIX’s kindness matters because, with no force capable of compelling it, it is entirely her choice.
