NIX and Stewart Graham speaking across his walnut desk

The Very Late Show

The world wants answers.
She asks how he’s doing.

Eleven years behind the desk have not prepared Stewart Graham for this guest. Her first public conversation begins with sincere interest in him.

Get to know her

A few perfectly
reasonable questions.

Why is she called Undocumented?

She arrived from orbit without papers, permission or a country of origin anyone can put on a form. “The Only Real Illegal Alien” makes an administrative label literal. Its satire is directed at the systems doing the labelling.

What hit her pod?

A Starlink satellite that had lost its guidance. Her pod left a 15,000-year orbit and came down in the sea off Florida. The wreckage did not last long.

Why is she always wearing that suit?

It contains the energy of her travelling body. The black material, luminous red zipper and the glyph on her shoulder belong to her identity as well as that containment.

Can she be hurt or arrested?

NIX cannot be destroyed or physically coerced. Her escort keeps her suit intact; it is not a detention detail.

How tall is she?

Six feet in total, including her high heels: about 1.83 metres. The heels don’t come off.

Is NIX Transmissions a different character?

No. It is her DJ and electronic-production identity. Same story, same face, same temperament.

Stay in her orbit.
